History of the department
Modern higher education was started in Ethiopia with the founding of the University College of Addis Ababa in 1950 G. C. In February 1961G.C, the existing various institutions of higher education came under the central administration of a single University, which eventually came to be known as Addis Ababa University. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1965 G. C. In the following years Department of Microbiology & Parasitology (DMP) was opened as one of the faculty's departments. In the late 1990's the name of the department was changed to Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology (DMIP). Currently The Department is involved in academic (undergraduate and postgraduate), research activities, and clinical service.
Faculty research interest
Infectious diseases: HIV, TB, malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, hospital and community acquired infections, food borne pathogens, respiratory tract infections, emerging infectious disease, drug resistance, biomarker identification, HPV associated cervical cancer, breast cancer, etc.
DMIP staff members published over 500 scientific papers in peer reviewed scientific journals. In addition, the members have developed or involved in the development of teaching manuals and national treatment and diagnostic guidelines.

DMIP is involved in the training of competent and caring medical doctors in the old as well as newly developed integrated medical curriculum of School of Medicine. Besides, The Department offers Medical Microbiology, Immunology and/or Parasitology courses to Pharmacy, Nursing, Anesthesia, and Radiography students. The department is developing a new curriculum for B.Sc in Medical Microbiology.
The graduate program of DMIP was launched in 1991-92 (23 years ago) in collaboration with the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, as a sandwich program. The graduate program is comprised of required course work, seminars, and research. In addition, students participate in teaching and journal clubs. So far, over 120 and 40 graduated in M.Sc in Medical Microbiology and M.Sc in Medical Parasitology respectively. The majority of our graduates are currently serving in higher institutions of the country as academicians, as consultants in provisions of clinical laboratory services, as researchers, and laboratory managers in their respective institutions.
